My name is Mila, and I am going to start high school this fall. Education is something very important to me- I love going to school and learning new things, and I think a love for discovery and knowledge is one of the fundamental building blocks of a happy life, and a functioning society. But through my experiences navigating my own public school system, I’ve learned that resources are spread anything but equitably. While money isn’t everything, it is a necessity in a school. Makeshift classrooms and under-payed teachers can’t reliably spark the love of learning in students, and to deny them that is to severely limit their chances of academic and general happiness and success. Nobody’s socio-economic background or neighborhood should ever prevent them from learning in a safe and well-equipped environment; that is something I firmly believe in, and will try my best to ensure.

My Community Action Plan

The primary issue my project addresses is the economic inequality between schools in the United States. While a larger movement is necessary to enact nation-wide change, I can supply some of my area’s most disadvantaged students with a few of the materials they will need for academic success, and that is my goal. I am going to fill backpacks for students in kindergarten through fifth grade with school supplies, resource directories, a handmade gift, and a book. These backpacks will be donated to one or more local homeless shelters who have expressed need for these supplies.

I have set my product list and pricing to accommodate 30 backpacks (with any extra supplies donated to the shelter as well), but if there are more donations, I would love to assemble and donate more completed sets. Below are the items in my Amazon Wish List, as well as any other supplies I need:

  • Backpacks
  • Erasers
  • Two-Pocket Folders
  • Colored composition notebooks
  • #2 Pencils
  • 1.5’’ binders
  • Glue sticks
  • Pencil sharpeners
  • Crayola 24 pc. Crayons
  • Plastic 12’’ rulers
  • Black ballpoint pens
  • 5" Blunt tip scissors
  • Lined Index Cards
