THE ANTI-RACIST GUIDEBOOK

The civil rights movement that took shape during the summer of 2020 caused many people to ask:

What can I do?

Do I engage in behaviors that are racist and harmful to BIPOC?

Where can I learn more about systemic racism?

What steps can I take to become anti-racist?

What more can I do to demonstrate my solidarity with BIPOC and their efforts towards racial equity?

These are good questions, and at SJSA we were already working with youth artivists through hands-on workshops that tackled systemic racism and other issues through textile art. We also focus on facilitating intergenerational dialogue between youth and the embroidery and quilting volunteers who create banners and quilts that amplify our artists’ voices. We encourage our volunteers to support the BIPOC community in the fight against racism and systemic violence.

But we, too, asked ourselves: What more can we do?

Provoking conversation and facilitating dialogue and personal growth is what SJSA is all about, which is how the Anti-Racist Guidebook was born. The Guidebook is a reference created by SJSA volunteers for the SJSA community. Within these chapters, authors share their personal experiences with social justice and provide research on various topics from transformative justice to the history of housing discrimination. Each chapter also includes a reflective activity to facilitate deeper engagement with the material. We encourage you to download these free resources to use in your personal growth and development as an ally in the fight for social justice.
